There are a lot of sites out there that will explain in great detail all the things that need to be considered when moving to America, I will not even try to attempt to give you this kind of information as I am not an immigration specialist or lawyer. What I would like to do is to give you a couple of hints that will help you get started once all the official paperwork has been done and you already arrived in America. Today I would like to tell you about how a reciprocity agreement between the U.S. and Germany can help German citizens when applying for a U.S. driver's license. The same agreement also helps U.S. citizens when applying for a German driver's license. For more information regarding the reciprocity agreement visit: http://germany.usembassy.gov/acs/drivers_license/
If you are a German citizen and you possess a valid German passport and valid German driver's license, you can potentially save some time! You might be able to claim the reciprocity agreement between the U.S. and Germany that exists in many U.S. states: this allows you to skip the written & driving test, if you bring a notarized translation of your German driver’s license along with all other acceptable and required documentation to apply. You will still need to complete the visual exam and pay the fee for the driver’s license.
Notarized translation documents can be obtained at any German consulate or at a translation service in your area. The fees range from $10-$50. Typically the Consulate will be cheaper than a professional translation service.
Make sure to ask if this agreement applies for the state you will be living in.

The privately owned website http://www.dmv.org/ offers a great and easy to understand overview of all DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) services such as driver's license, state ID, vehicle registration etc. for all U.S. states.
Note: As there is no uniform requirement for all 50 U.S. states, please contact the local U.S. state authorities for the details. In the USA drivers licenses are regulated exclusively by each U.S. state (Florida, California, etc.) not by the federal government as is the case in Germany. From my experience I know that Illinois & Michigan honor this agreement.
